Emergent Berlin Festival 2023 : Nov 17-19 @Baumhaus & @Panke

The Evolution Will Not Be Gentrified

Our 10th annual festival brings together fellow local initiatives, organizations and neighbors who want to take action for sustainability from personal, ecological, aesthetic, cultural, economic and social perspectives.

Emergent Berlin is a self-organised gathering and invitation for open exchange, connections and creating synergies. This year’s festival theme is a riff on the 1971 song “The Revolution Will Not Be Televisedby Gil Scott Heron and sets the tone for the gathering.  The main point of the song is that the first change needs to take place in your mind and that we can not rely on main stream forces to come up with or enact the solutions we need in time enough to save and preserve what is left of our world.  In 2023 it seems that our situation is quite similar…

Join us for:
• 3 days program to reflect, share experiences/learnings and make plans in the cozy, informal and creative atmosphere of Baumhaus
• 2 evenings of parties in Panke Club
• 1 art exhibition at Baumhaus

Sunday November 19

On the last day we invite you to become an Evenger, a real life hero dedicated to making the world a more sustainable place. In a very real sense, it is us the everyday people who need to rise up and become the real heroes who can save the day.  A real hero is someone who strives to create and maintain more balance in the world personally, ecologically, aesthetically, culturally, economically and socially (peaces). These days it takes many collaborative leagues of heroes to get the job done. Our league is called the Evengers because we work to bring more balance or ‘evenness’ into the world. Do you have what it takes to be a real hero, to be an Evenger?

FLOW

A guided vocal meditation

It is very easy to participate, no musical talent or training is required, anyone is welcome to join! Just make sure to be on time: We will explain a few basic and intuitively understandable concepts to make it super easy to dive in for everyone.
Flow is a state of being… an experience when you allow yourself to be 100% fully engaged in the present moment in a feedback loop between clarity and satisfaction. It is an undeniable sensation where things seem to be more effortless, pleasurable, in sync, and you can easily sense a connection with something greater than yourself; this is what we will create…:
• a connected and mindful meditation where it is possible to blissfully surf the cutting edge of the present moment together…
• a game where it’s possible to feel excited and calm in the same moment, and everyone can win as much as they like…
Scott Bolden, co-founder of Das Baumhaus Berlin will share some very easy, practical and effective methods developed during the last 8 years of facilitating the “Improvisational Groove Orchestra” (I.G.O.) improv vocal jam sessions. Within 20 minutes participants learn to use the common sound space to create resonance in the form of improvisational music where it is quite common to experience some real flow moments…
It is very easy to participate, no musical talent or training is required so anyone is welcome to join. Most of the session is done with eyes closed to avoid visual distractions and keep focus on the co-created sound space. During these sessions we will also have special guest instrumental musicians, poets, writers and beat-boxers etc… If you would like to be a special guest, please send us a message.
Important – if you have never done this in the Baumhaus before and can not make it in time for the intro and warm up, then please wait until the next session to join. It is very important to understand the methodology and warm up in the group before joining in!

Jingwen Yao is a Chinese visual artist living in Europe since 2012, currently based in Berlin. She addresses pressing issues such as environmental crises and gender challenges through her art. She is also the artist we decided to work with to develop this year’s festival poster design.

Growing up in metropolitan Beijing, Jingwen was always drawn to nature and greenery. Weekend family hiking tours in the mountains nearby gave her the chance to experience the beauty of nature, but also sense the deterioration of the environment. Since then, she has started reflecting on various environmental problems such as pollution, deforestation, and global warming through paintings and drawings.

In recent years, she visited and volunteered at different ecological projects in Europe. This experience has deepened her understanding of the climate crisis we face and its urgency. In 2020, Jingwen created a 12 meter long banner as an art activism act in Suderbyn ecovillage on Gotland, Sweden, to deliver the message “Make gardens, not war” to the military base directly opposite of the ecovillage.

Jingwen’s work is not limited to environmental issues. The experience of living and working in different cultures in Asia, Europe and Africa also has broadened her perspectives on a wider range of topics such as gender inequality, discrimination, and cultural isolation. Creating art around these issues has become her way of expressing herself and communicating with the world.
